The following are the main advantages and characteristics of polyolefin hot melt adhesive, which are explained in detail in several aspects:
1、 Core advantages
Excellent aging resistance and chemical stability
Weather resistance: The product has strong tolerance to ultraviolet rays, oxygen, and ozone, is not easily yellowed or degraded, and is suitable for outdoor or long-term use.
Chemical resistance: It has good resistance to most chemical substances such as acid, alkali, salt, etc., and is not easily corroded.
Water resistance: Extremely low water absorption, the adhesive layer is almost insoluble in water, and the bonding strength will not be reduced due to humid environments, making it very suitable for high humidity or water immersion environments.
Excellent electrical insulation performance
It has high volume resistivity and dielectric strength, making it an excellent electrical insulation material widely used for insulation wrapping and sealing of wires, cables, and electronic components.
Low toxicity and environmentally friendly, easy to process
Non toxic and odorless: Most polyolefin hot melt adhesives meet the hygiene standards of agencies such as the FDA (US Food and Drug Administration) and can be used for food packaging, hygiene products, etc.
Solvent free: 100% solid content, does not release volatile organic compounds during production and use, is environmentally friendly, and poses minimal health hazards to operators.
Easy to operate: It can be coated by heating and melting, and solidified instantly after cooling. It has high production efficiency and is very suitable for automated high-speed production lines.
2、 Main features
bonding performance
Good adhesion to non-polar materials: particularly adept at bonding non-polar plastics such as polyethylene and polypropylene that are difficult to bond themselves. This is a significant characteristic that distinguishes it from other types of hot melt adhesives such as polyamide and polyester.
Adhesive range: It also has good adhesive effect on various materials such as metal, wood, paper, and fabric.
mechanical properties
Good toughness: After curing, the adhesive layer has a certain degree of flexibility and elongation, can withstand certain deformation and impact, and is not easily brittle.
Medium strength: Compared with reactive polyurethane hot melt adhesive, its final bonding strength is usually at a moderate level, but it is sufficient for most packaging and assembly applications.
thermal performance
Wide range of melt viscosity: By adjusting the molecular weight and formula of the polymer, a variety of products can be produced from low viscosity to high viscosity to adapt to various construction processes such as spraying, roller coating, and scraping.
Heat resistance and low temperature resistance: Different types of polyolefin hot melt adhesives exhibit different properties. For example, polyethylene based hot melt adhesives have relatively good heat resistance, while EVA based adhesives are slightly inferior. It usually has good low-temperature resistance and can maintain flexibility even at low temperatures.
3、 Limitations (the other side that needs to be understood)
Temperature resistance has an upper limit: As a thermoplastic, it will soften and melt again when exposed to heat, so its high temperature resistance is limited and it is usually not suitable for long-term use in high temperature environments above 65 ° C.
Insufficient adhesion to certain polar materials: Although it has excellent adhesion to non-polar materials, its adhesion strength to polar plastics such as nylon, PET, PC, or untreated metals may not be as strong as polyester or polyamide hot melt adhesives.
Relatively limited load-bearing capacity: Compared with structural adhesives such as epoxy resin and acrylic structural adhesive, its load-bearing capacity is weaker and it is generally not used for bonding main load-bearing structural components.
4、 Main application areas
Based on the above characteristics, polyolefin hot melt adhesive is widely used in:
Packaging industry: carton sealing, food packaging (such as beverage bottle labels), and assembly of disposable tableware.
Sanitary products industry: production of diapers and sanitary napkins (used for absorbent core, anti leakage edge, backing adhesive, etc.).
Automotive interior: composite bonding of roof, door panels, and carpets.
Wire and cable: bundling, insulation fixing, and labeling pasting of wire harnesses.
Furniture and wood processing: edging, veneer splicing.
Book binding: wireless adhesive binding.
